Everything you need to know about Eggs

Know about Eggs: the breakfast food that can be cooked in a million different ways and never get boring. Whether you like them scrambled, fried, boiled, poached, or even raw (if you’re feeling adventurous), there’s an egg preparation for every taste and occasion.

But let’s be real, eggs can also be pretty weird. They come in all shapes and sizes, from the small quail egg to the massive ostrich egg. And don’t even get me started on the colors! Brown, white, speckled, blue-green… Who knew eggs could be so fancy?

And let’s not forget about the egg puns. They’re a cracking good time!

Do you know about this one?

Why don’t eggs tell jokes?

They’d crack each other up too much!

Or….

how about this one…

Why did the egg cross the mountain?

To get to the sunny side!

But all jokes aside, eggs are a great source of protein and nutrients. So next time you crack one open for breakfast, remember to thank the chicken that laid it and enjoy your egg-cellent meal!

Nutritional Information of Eggs:

Eggs are an excellent source of protein, containing all nine essential amino acids that the body needs. One large egg contains approximately 6 grams of protein. They also contain vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D, vitamin B12, choline, and selenium.

Eggs are also a good source of healthy fats, including monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which are essential for overall health. Additionally, eggs are low in carbohydrates, making them a great choice for those following a low-carb or ketogenic diet.

Health Benefits of Eggs:

  • Promote Weight Loss: Eggs are a filling and satisfying food that can help promote weight loss. Studies have shown that people who eat eggs for breakfast feel fuller for longer and consume fewer calories throughout the day than those who eat other breakfast foods.
  • Boost Brain Health: Eggs are an excellent source of choline, a nutrient that is essential for brain health. Choline is involved in many important processes in the body, including the production of neurotransmitters that are essential for mood, memory, and cognitive function.
  • Support Eye Health: Eggs are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants that are essential for eye health. These antioxidants may help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.
  • Improve Bone Health: Eggs are a good source of vitamin D, a nutrient that is essential for bone health. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is necessary for strong bones and teeth.
  • Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease: Contrary to previous beliefs, recent research suggests that dietary cholesterol, such as that found in eggs, does not increase the risk of heart disease. In fact, eggs may help reduce the risk of heart disease by improving cholesterol levels and reducing inflammation in the body.

Know about ways to cook eggs

Boiled Eggs: Place the eggs in a pot of water, bring to a boil, and then let simmer for a few minutes depending on how you like your eggs. For soft-boiled eggs, cook for about 6 minutes, while for hard-boiled eggs, cook for about 10-12 minutes. Once cooked, run the eggs under cold water and peel.

There are different ways of cooking the eggs depending on the time they are cooked for:

  1. Soft-Boiled Eggs: Soft-boiled eggs have a runny yolk and a just-set white. To make soft-boiled eggs, place the eggs in a small pot and cover with cold water. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat, then immediately turn off the heat and cover the pot with a lid. Let the eggs sit in the hot water for 4-6 minutes, depending on the size of the eggs and how runny you want the yolk. Once done, use a spoon to gently crack the shell and peel off the top of the egg.

2. Medium-Boiled Eggs: Medium-boiled eggs have a slightly firmer yolk than soft-boiled eggs, but still have a slightly runny center. To make medium-boiled eggs, place the eggs in a small pot and cover with cold water. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 7-8 minutes, depending on the size of the eggs. Once done, drain the water and run the eggs under cold water for a minute to stop the cooking process. Then, gently crack the shell and peel off the egg.

3. Hard-Boiled Eggs: Hard-boiled eggs have a fully cooked yolk and a firm white. To make hard-boiled eggs, place the eggs in a small pot and cover with cold water. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 10-12 minutes, depending on the size of the eggs. Once done, drain the water and run the eggs under cold water for a minute to stop the cooking process. Then, gently crack the shell and peel off the egg.

Remember, the cooking times may vary slightly depending on the size of the eggs and the altitude at which you are cooking. It’s always a good idea to test one egg first to see if it’s cooked to your liking before cooking the rest. Happy boiling!

Omlette: An omelette is made from beaten eggs that are cooked in a frying pan and typically folded over a filling, such as cheese, vegetables, or meat. The eggs are first beaten with a fork or whisk until the whites and yolks are fully combined. The mixture is then poured into a heated non-stick pan and cooked over medium heat until the bottom is set and the top is still slightly runny. The filling is then added to one side of the omelette, and the other side is carefully folded over to enclose the filling. The omelette is then cooked for a few more seconds until the filling is warmed through and the eggs are fully cooked. Omelettes are a popular breakfast dish, but they can also be served for brunch, lunch, or dinner, and they can be filled with a wide variety of ingredients to suit any taste.

Fried Eggs: Heat a little bit of oil or butter in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Crack the egg into the pan and cook until the white is set and the yolk is to your desired level of doneness.

Scrambled Eggs: Crack the eggs into a bowl, add a splash of milk or cream, and whisk until combined. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat, add a little butter, and then pour in the egg mixture. Stir constantly until the eggs are cooked to your desired level of doneness.

Poached Eggs: Bring a pot of water to a simmer, and then add a splash of vinegar. Crack the egg into a small bowl, and then gently pour it into the water. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until the white is set and the yolk is still runny. Use a slotted spoon to remove the egg from the water.

Baked Eggs: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Crack the eggs into individual ramekins, and then add a splash of cream, salt, and pepper. Bake for about 15-20 minutes until the whites are set and the yolks are still runny.

Egg Frittata: An egg frittata is an Italian dish made from beaten eggs that are cooked with various ingredients, such as cheese, vegetables, meat, and herbs. To make a frittata, you first cook any desired ingredients in a non-stick pan over medium heat until they are tender and lightly browned. You then pour beaten eggs over the ingredients and cook until the eggs are set on the bottom, but still runny on top. At this point, you can transfer the pan to the oven and bake the frittata until it’s fully cooked and lightly browned on top.
